Learn About the World through Cultural Art

Introduce kids to the arts of other cultures so they can discover how other societies lived in the past and what they value today.

enrich learning, make connections with the world around us, and develop outlooks needed to be part of the 21st century global community.

A Look at One of Our Classes: Indian Folk Art

In this class, we were introduced to art and culture in India. We learned about tolerance and the importance of listening to others' perspectives through an ancient Jain fable known as The Blind Men and the Elephant. Then we made Gond folk art pieces of the Indian elephant. We learned how Gond art pays reverence to animals by depicting them in harmony with nature. For the past 1500 years, the Gond community of central India has used patterns of line and vivid color derived from natural pigments to paint animals in magical abstract ways. Our paintings used watercolors, acrylics, and black marker, and we left our backgrounds white, just like many Gond artists do.
